Volcanology and Petrology

Volcanology and Petrology is a research group at the Instituto de Investigaciones en Estratigrafía (IIES) leads by Hugo Murcia since 2015, and currently with the collaboration of Susana Osorio. Our experience has enabled training students in different levels such as undergraduate, master and PhD, as well as offer research internships and postdoctoral research stays. Based on this area, we create academic and research projects, develop publications, attend national and international events, and annually offer the International Volcanology Field course. Our interests do not have limits, although currently our main projects are framed in the active volcanism/magmatism as well as the Miocene volcanism/magmatism in the country.

I am Geologist from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia), MSc in Earth Sciences from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (México) and PhD in Geology from the University of Auckland (New Zealand). My main interests are in volcanology and petrology, although I work on several other topics that concern my colleagues. Currently, I am professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the Universidad de Caldas, take part in the Research Group on Stratigraphy and Volcanology (GIEV) Cumanday, and lead the Volcanology and Petrology research group at the Institute. I am also part of the Scientific committee of the Institute.

I’m Geologist from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia), MSc in Earth sciences from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (México) and PhD candidate in Earth sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (México). I’m dedicated to geosciences research especially in volcanic evolution. During my postgraduate projects, I have been working in cartography, stratigraphy and geochemistry of monogenetic volcanic fields and volcanic calderas. Currently, I work as a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the Universidad de Caldas, I am part of the Volcanology and Petrology research group of this Institute, and I am a member of the Research Group on Stratigraphy and Volcanology (GIEV) Cumanday.

I am a Geologist from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia). My main interests are volcanology, petrology and geochemistry. However, I can collaborate in some related branches such as stratigraphy and sedimentology. Currently, I am a student of the Master of Earth Sciences at the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia) and my research project involves sedimentological, petrographic and geochemical analysis of the volcanic products of the Combia Formation (Miocene) in Colombia, in order to understand their origin, as well as to propose an evolutionary model of the magmatic system.
Currently, I am part of the Volcanology and Petrology group of this Institute, and I am also part of the Research Group on Stratigraphy and Volcanology (GIEV) Cumanday.

I am Geologist from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia) and student of Master in Earth Sciences from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia). My main interests are volcanology and petrology. My research project involves the characterization of the volcanoes belonging to the Samaná Monogenetic Volcanic Field (Colombia) in order to reconstruct the history and understand the plumbing system. Currently, I am part of the Volcanology and Petrology group of this Institute, and I am also part of the Research Group on Stratigraphy and Volcanology (GIEV) Cumanday.

I am Geologist from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia) and master student in Earth Sciences from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia). My main interests are Volcanology and Structural Geology, although I work on several other topics such as geomorphology, petrography and geochemistry, that concern my colleagues. My research project involves the structural and temporal analysis of the Villamaría-Termales Monogenetic Volcanic Field, Cordillera Central in Colombia, seeking to understand the structural conditions that allowed the location of these volcanoes in the past. in addition to proposing the temporality of tectonic activity of the faults in the sector. Currently, I belong to volcanology and petrology group in this Institute, and I am also part of the Research Group on Stratigraphy and Volcanology (GIEV) Cumanday.

I am Geologist from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia), specialist in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Universidad de Manizales (Colombia) and PhD candidate in Geological Sciences from the Universidad Nacional de Salta (Argentina). My main interests are volcanology, petrology, geomorphology and the application of GIS in geology. My research project involves petrography, geochemical and morphological analysis of Cerro Bravo volcano, Colombia; in order to reconstruct the volcanic evolutive periods and its magmatic system.
Currently, I belong to the Research Group on Stratigraphy and Volcanology (GIEV) Cumanday.
