Carlos is a geologist with a master’s degree from the University of Caldas in Colombia and a Ph.D. from the University of Granada in Spain. He is a sedimentary geologist who specializes in the comprehensive study of the spatiotemporal evolution and sedimentary dynamics of depositional systems. He integrates process-based sedimentology, ichnology, physical stratigraphy, and regional geology into the detailed reconstruction of sedimentary environments, primarily of shallow marine, including deltas, and deep-marine environments. His research spans a wide range of temporal scales, including the Mesozoic—particularly the Cretaceous—and the Cenozoic, as well as diverse geological contexts, including sedimentary basins associated with passive and active margins. Geographically, his work has been conducted in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Spain.
His current research focuses on understanding the evolution of sedimentary environments and depositional systems, and macrobenthic communities during the formation of the Great Arc of Caribbean and the Isthmus of Panama during the Cretaceous and Miocene–Pliocene respectively.
Throughout his career, he has conducted stratigraphic studies in various Colombian sedimentary basins associated with hydrocarbon exploration, including the Middle and Lower Magdalena, Sinú-San Jacinto, and Cordillera Oriental basins.
